Help w/ weeds in my flower garden?

I'm a beginner gradener, and I'm having a problem with weeds in my garden.

What is something good to put down that will take care of the weed and grass problem without hurting my flowers?

Any advice is appreciated! Thanks to all that answer!
Help w/ weeds in my flower garden?
There is a product called Preen that will kill weeds but not plants and/or flowers. It works well and even has a formula that includes food for the flowers.

My method has always to pull a few each day and I manage to keep ahead of the weed population, but many people are not willing or able to manage that schedule. Mulch is also a viable alternative for managing weeds.
Reply:If hand weeding is not your thing. Round up works well. I don't know where your are but if it's nut grass it will grow through weed block material. I have seen it grow through the bottom of above ground swimming pools. The trick is application. If you get it on your plants it will kill them too. Mix up some in a container you can get your hand in. Put on a Playtex glove then a cotton garden glove over it. Stick your hand in the herbicide and get the cotton glove wet. Apply the herbicide to the weed or grass with your hand. This will keep the over spray off your flowers.
Reply:The only real, organic solution is to hand weed. While this sounds laborious and time - consuming it is by far the best way to control them. I enjoy hand weeding, because it gives you an oppurtunity to get close and personal with your plants, monitor what weeds are coming up, and meet some of the creatures that live in your garden.
Reply:Nothing works quite as good as the fabric and mulch but if you have little time and less money, Miracle Grow has a product that has a weed inhibitor and fertilizer that you just shake onto your garden. You will have to pull the weeds first but I find that this product helps.
Reply:White vinegar makes an excellent earth-friendly herbicide. Just spray the vinegar full strength onto weeds, making sure they’re well doused. This works best on a sunny day (The acid stops the plants from absorbing moisture if it’s warm and sunny) The plants will turn black in a few hours.

Make sure none of it drifts over onto other, desirable plants. Use a piece of cardboard or a sheet of newspaper to protect nearby plants, if necessary.

Remember that weeds are simply plants in the wrong place.
Reply:You can put down landscape fabric. Cut holes for your plants and gently pull them through the top of the fabric. After the fabric is down..put down mulch
Reply:I've put down newspaper instead of weed fabric. It does a better job and is biodegrable.
