How can I keep my neighbors dog from digging in the garden and my flower bed?

Is there anyway thing that you can plant or put on the spots where stuff is planted to deter animals besides a fence?

Mothballs are extremely toxic to people, animals and the environment. You can use hotsauce in a spray bottle (strain the hotsauce through several layers of cheese cloth and mix 5 parts sauce to one part water) and spray it around your garden, on the plants, and you can sprinkle red pepper flakes (cheap-from the dollar store) in the area the dog is digging. This will also work for deer, too.

Also, have a talk with the neighbor. Tell the neighbor that if the dog is not kept controlled that animal services will be called and they will be fined.

For the guy who suggested antifreeze, you are an A**HOLE. It is the neighbor's fault, not the dog's. I worked as a Vet tech for 13 years. Antifreeze poisoning is a horrible, slow death. Why don't you try drinking some!
Reply:What lousy neighbors. I have a dog and I'd pay for the damage and replace the plants. Mine laid on a neighbor's plant once and bought and planted a full-grown replacement.

A trip to your local garden center will help. There are many products which deter dogs and cats from your garden. There are chemicals which make the garden smell awful to a dog, fine to us, and there are even sound repellers on the market. In the meantime, you may want to get a few small-thorned bushes such as hollies and barberry.

I put out pepper for the cats. It may work on dogs too, but it washes away in the rain. Even though I haven't been keeping up on the pepper, the neighbor's cat may have been trained to keep off. I have less poo in the mulch.

To stop him from digging you could put chicken wire pegged down very securely. Put your mulch on top to hide the wire.

I would not put out anti-freeze. That is deadly poison and will kill the dog. If the dog ever gets sick and dies, you will be blamed and frankly, if a neighbor threatened me with that I'd file a police report. You'll be suspect for anything that goes wrong at the house.
Reply:Yes, you can put out a pan of antifreeze, if you have the stomach. I tell my neighbors once. Keep your dogs out of my yard if you want to keep them alive. I expect you to do the same to mine.
Reply:Moth balls will work too, they don't like the smell of them, however the smell will be strong on hot humid days, but they will eventually evaporate....
Reply:The offending animal.
Reply:A gun
