I have a very small space. I want to use short plants. This will be in a front yard. I want to use flowers to kind of hide the vegetable garden. I don't have a backyard. This will be my first time trying this. Please send suggestions.Thanks. Have a great day.
Have you ever had a vegetable and non vegetable garden combined. What kind of plants did you use?
Yes, in fact, this can be a most attractive way to raise veggies and enjoy flowers, too. In addition, you can enjoy a garden with fewer pests bothering your plants.
Reply:Hi:
There are many different plants you can put in with your vegetables. How about some culinary or ornamental herbs? There are many useful herbs to plant that will look and taste great with your fresh vegetables. You can also put some annual or perennial flowers in with your vegetables. I will link you to the garden project section of my website. There is a page on a combination vegetable, herb and flower garden.
You could also accent your vegetables with some dwarf shrubs. This will give you garden a unique look. I will link you to the site map, as this page has everything that is on the website. Browse through and see if you can find any other articles, tips or techniques that may help you. There is a gallery of plants section and a variety of more plant specimens for you to browse through. Good luck to you and have a great day!

Reply:OK Dahlias are a great front yard flower and would mix nicely with bush tomatoes. Basil is a great spice plant but if kept pinched it will bush and look like a great colorful plant. You can also grow and eat kale which is a very colorful, ornamental plant. You probably dont want too many members of the squash family but you can grow cucumbers and hide them in amongst nasturtiums. Nasturtiums get somewhat bushy, not very tall, but will hide anything growing behind them. Radishes can be interspersed with marigolds.
Reply:Hi, You didn't specify what types of veg. you want to plant. Avoid plants like pumpkins and squash. They need alot of space. But, if you could incorporated a trellis, you could have the mini pumpkins, cucumbers, and green beans without using alot of your space. I plant my tomatoes with morning glories vining up them. There are other vining flowers that would work too. I would plant short flower annuals like marigolds and Sun Coleus and Feathers (Celosia spp.) in front of the taller plants. Another thing that adds interest I think are sunflowers. There are the mammoth ones or multibloom versions. And with their height and strength you can have more flowers or vining vegetables using them as a trellis. Just remember to consider all plant heights when you place them, so everything gets enough sunlight. Make sure your soil is in good shape too. I use organic compost (Lowes) and slow release fertilizer granules. For my tomatoes though I water them with Miracle Grow once a week. Well, hope this helps. Good Luck! Lori
Reply:I plant Marigolds in my veggie garden. They look nice and just keep multiplying.
Also this flower gives of a ''scent'' or something or other which keeps the damaging bugs away. Better than poison
