Okay, I want something that stands out, but looks good together. I want people to say, "I would have never thought of those flowers together, but that looks great!"
Any websites that I can go to that has pics of flowers that are used in gardens?
I want to build a really cool garden?
the best way to achieve this look is by combining different types of plants and not just using bedding flowers. Use herbs, vegetables and houseplants in combination with the more traditional bedding plants. One combo i used last year that really got attention was purple leafed basil (Red Rubin) with mauve impatiens( Blue Pearl).
also used large yucca plants (8 dollars at wal mart) as a 3' high focal plant and surrounded it with pink oriental lilies (stargazer) and surrounded the lilies with spreading petunias (blue wave), and then edged the whole bed in pink leafed flowering kale.
Be creative and think outside the box--just make sure the colors and heights work together.
Reply:You need to be a little bit more specific - what sort of climate do you live in?
Go to your local library and look up landscaping and gardening. There are no shortage of books out there which specify the best plants for a specific environment.
One word to the wise - be mindful of how much you're planting and where the garden might be in a few years. Do you want a huge water bill because you planted waaaaaaaay too much stuff? Or cracks in your foundation from a tree with humongous roots?
The house that my wife and I bought has way too many plants and it costs a fortune keeping them watered. Then there's the trees which are overgrown to the point that the upper branches are threatening various power lines.
Give careful thought to your landscape before you make the mistake of planting stuff that's going to be expensive to maintain. Also, consider drought resistent plants.
