Planting a flower garden?

We had a small fish pond next to our back door (3X4 and 2 feet deep) I have decided to turn it into a flower bed. i have filled it with soil already. is there anything special i need to do to get started? what kind of flowers should i use? it's right next to the house and does not get alot of direct sunlight. is there a certain time of year i need to start planting for them to live? i know i sound dumb but i have never done this and usually kill potted plants so any advice will really help me. thanks

Try growing begonias and coleus. Plant six packs at end of April or when frost is past.
Reply:I hope you either removed the liner or poked holes in it before you filled it up. If not, you have a huge space that will hold water.

Assuming you have removed the liner, you can use any kind of shade plants you like. You do not mention where you live, so go to your local nursery and look where they keep shade plants. Check on their growing patterns and plant after the last danger of frost.
Reply:I don't whether this will help, but when I started gardening years ago, I knew absolutely nothing about it, and I just played around and had fun. I got books out of the library and it gradually seemed to me that there's not a whole lot you need to know that you can't learn for yourself.

Your spot is shady, and you need hardy plants you can feel confident with. Just for fun to begin with, some busy lizzies or fuchsias would be fine. Ferns would grow there too. (I'm assuming the pond liner isn't intact any more, or the little bed will turn into a bog.)

You can plant stuff that's been grown in pots (like you'll find in the garden centre) all year round as long as it's not cold and icy. Maybe you could look at packs of seeds - if they're easy to grow the packet will say so clearly. You can just sow and forget.

Thing is, don't spend much money and then it doesn't matter if the things don't survive this time round. It's a learning thing, and you could really come to love it.
Reply:Hi...

First off, you should go to a library and pick out some beginners guide to gardening. Or go to a book store to get a good book on plants in your area.

I don't know where you live but you need to find what your zone is for planting. You can go on the Internet and goggle your area with garden zone to find out. You need to plant in the spring and check out if you want annuals or perennials. Start slowly and check out if you are Part-sun or shade. Part-sun needs 4 hours of light. Shade is even less. Hostas and Astibes are wonderful plants around a pond. I hope this will help you out.
