What do i add to the soil for vegetable and flower gardens?

We just got blessed by MIL with a rototiller

so we don't have to hand shovel our veg garden and

new flower bed

my question is what do we add to the soil

peat moss and top soil, or black earth or triple mix

or some or all ?

You really need to do a soil test for pH and NPK. The black dirt, peat moss etc is fine but when you start dumping lime or chemical fertilizers on without knowing your soils pH or fertilizer needs you don't know what you are going to end up with. An over dose of Nitrogen can result in nice big plants with no flowers or fruit, Lime on an already alkaline soil can result in no plants at all.....so on and so forth. You can send a soil sample to your county extension office or a nearby university for testing or buy a simple home soil test kit at your friendly, smiling garden store.
Reply:Hi;

I am glad you got a tiller as this is a great tool to turn your soil over. Make sure you turn the soil over a few times. The more the soil is worked, the better for your flowers and vegetables. If you have your own compost material, that would be great to add. You can also add organic mushroom compost. This is an organic fertilizer that will last up to one year. It doesn't smell great put your flower and veggies will love it. It comes in bags and you can purchase it at any chain store, nursery or garden center.

One of the best top soil mixture for you garden or landscape is a mixture of black dirt, saw dust and sand. You can also add this mixture if available in your area.

I will link you to the garden project section of my website. There is a page on a combination garden of veggies, flowers and herbs you might be interested in. I will also link you to the site map, as this page has everything that is on the website. Browse through and see if you can find any other information that may be useful to you. Good luck to you and have a great day!

Reply:Any of these will be fine. But add lime. Sulfur coated pelletized lime. You can buy it in bags its cheap. But u have to put it down at a rate of at least 10 lbs per 1000 square ft to be effective. U will have the best flowers and vegetables ever I swear. It will relieve soil acidity and really make the plants grow. Not to mention it will make the soil very dark and rich. Farmers have used it for years and I own a fertilizer company. Trust me its the way to go and is only about 4 bucks. For a 50 lb. Bag of it. Great results guaranteed ! Good luck
Reply:you can add 101010 or 51010 nitrogen some of all above miraclegro it all will do the same thing.
