What can I put in my flower garden to keep cats from using it as a litter box?

DON'T use Cayenne pepper or moth balls! Cayenne gets on the cat's paws and they wash themselves and get it in their eyes and can literally scratch their eyes out. Very cruel! Moth balls are toxic to both animals and children.

Some people have said black pepper is toxic to cats, but there's no evidence of that. Use black pepper if you must.

Here are some things others have had success with:

Cats don't like citrus. Orange or lemon essential oil can be sprinkled in the garden or made into a spray to repel them. (Spray on plants and soil, NOT on the cat! ;-) Many gardeners swear by this! You can also just throw orange or grapefruit rinds in the garden.

Ammonia soaked corn cobs

Blood meal---they hate the smell. This is also a fertilizer, use sparingly!

Marigolds--The jury is out, but some folks swear by them.

Chicken wire. Cats get their claws stuck in it while trying to dig and it will deter them.

Cedar compost.

Vinegar or wine vinegar

Rose bush cuttings or other thorny brambles, if they won't get in the way.

One thing to keep in mind is that although you view them as pests, and they are in this respect, those same cats will also keep your garden free from moles, squirrels, rabbits, birds, and other critters that can be potentially far more damaging than the cats. They play their part in nature's grand scheme.

Hope this helps.

Peace,

Polly

Moth Flakes

When the cat scratches the smell of the moth flakes chases them away.

Do not use Moth Balls, although it has the same effect, they look silly in the garden.
